OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT MacOS App to Everyone Initially limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is now available for non-paying chatbot users, provided they have a compatible Mac.
OpenAI's ChatGPT app for macOS is now available for everyone, not just Plus users.
OpenAI last month announced a desktop app for macOS but limited it to those who pay $20 per month for the premium version of its chatbot. It's now open to everyone, whether they have a subscription or not. The one caveat is you need a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 14 and up.
The app works similarly to the website; ask questions with text or photos and take screenshots. You can also speak directly to the AI, but the enhanced voice mode OpenAI showed off at its GPT-4o launch is still in the works following the Scarlett Johansson voice kerfuffle.
"We’re improving the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content,” OpenAI tells Bloomberg. “We’re also working on improving the user experience and preparing our infrastructure to scale to millions while maintaining real-time responses.”
Launch ChatGPT anywhere in macOS with the Option + Spacebar shortcut, although that's customizable in the settings if you prefer to use something else. In terms of UI, ChatGPT shows up as a simple search bar that overlays whatever you're doing when it's in focus.
